THURSDAY, MAY 1 | 7 P.M. | BLOCK 7 | FEATURE | FREDERICKSBURG THEATER COMPANY | SPECIAL SCREENING

Bernie | USA | Drama | 99 minutes | Special Screening
Directed by Richard Linklater

In the tiny, rural town of Carthage, Texas, assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede (Jack Black – School of Rock) was one of the town's most beloved residents. He taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Everyone loved and appreciated Bernie, so it came as no surprise when he befriended Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine – The Apartment, Elsa & Fred), an affluent widow who was as well known for her sour attitude as her fortune. Bernie frequently traveled with Marjorie and even managed her banking affairs. Marjorie quickly became fully dependent on Bernie and his generosity and Bernie struggled to meet her increasing demands. Bernie continued to handle her affairs, and the townspeople went months without seeing Marjorie.

Then, in August 1997, in a story that made headlines in newspapers around the country, Mrs. Nugent was found dead, shot four times in the back, and buried under some frozen foods in the large, rectangular freezer in her garage.

What made the story of Mrs. Nugent's murder so peculiar was that she had been dead for nine months before people noticed she wasn't around.  What made the story truly bizarre, however, was the announcement by police that Bernie not only had murdered Mrs. Nugent but had been using her money to give to people in need throughout Carthage. He even donated $100,000 in Mrs. Nugent's name to build a new Sunday school building at the Methodist church. Almost immediately after his arrest, even after he confessed to killing her, Carthage citizens rallied around Bernie, going so far as to drive around the courthouse blowing their horns, and begging District Attorney Davidson not to prosecute their favorite assistant funeral home director.

Elsa & Fred
FRIDAY, MAY 2 | 11:30 A.M. | BLOCK 9 | FEATURE | FRITZTOWN CINEMA

Elsa & Fred | USA | Dramedy | 104 minutes | Texas Premiere
Directed by Michael Radford

"Elsa and Fred" is the story of two people who at the end of the road, discover that it's never too late to love and make dreams come true. Elsa (Shirley MacLaine) has lived for the past 60 years dreaming of a moment that Fellini had already envisaged: the scene in 'La Dolce Vita' at the Fontana di Trevi. The same scene without Anita Ekberg in it, but with Elsa instead. Without Marcello Mastroiani but with that love that took so long to arrive. Fred (Christopher Plummer) has always been a good man who did everything he was supposed to do. After losing his wife, he feels disturbed and confused and his daughter decides that it would be best if he moves into a smaller apartment where he ends meeting Elsa. From that moment on, everything changes. Elsa bursts into his life like a whirlwind, determined to teach him that the time he has left to live -- be it more or less -- is precious and that he should enjoy it as he pleases. Fred surrenders to Elsa's frenzy, to her youth, to her boldness, to her beautiful madness. And this is how Fred learns how to live. When he learns about Elsa's terminal illness, he decides to make her dream come true and takes Elsa to Rome to reenact with her the famous scene at the Fontana di Trevi.

Lord Montagu
FRIDAY, MAY 2 | 2:30 P.M. | BLOCK 11 | FEATURE | FREDERICKSBURG THEATER COMPANY

Lord Montagu | USA | Documentary | Luke Korem

The fascinating inside story of Lord Edward Montagu, one of England's most controversial and iconic aristocrats.

As the youngest member in parliament and sole heir to his family’s 7,000 acre English estate, Lord Edward Montagu’s life was rich and privileged. However in 1954, Edward, then aged twenty-five, became England's most infamous aristocrat when he was arrested for homosexual offenses and eventually sentenced to a year in prison. Despite the odds against him, Montagu persevered to become a prominent national figure by turning his estate into one of England’s greatest tourist attractions, and leading the way into a new era of the British aristocracy. This film features never-before-seen footage from the Montagu archives, interviews with his family, friends and fellow aristocrats, and personal details from Lord Montagu’s own writings to tell the story of his unconventional and often controversial life.

HCFF Notes: Texas based filmmakers, Russell Wayne Groves (producer), Bradley Jackson (writer) and Luke Korem (director) will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening. Groves and Jackson are 2012 HCFF alums – The Man Who Never Cried.
